What MERRIK is

MERRIK is a private, invitation-only web application that one family uses to organize shared household activities: movie nights and outings, shared calendars, tasks, and reminders.

MERRIK is not open to the public. There is no public sign-up. Every member is a family member, personally invited and given an account by the MERRIK account owner. Nothing is sold, and there is no advertising.

MERRIK Family Notifications (text messages)

Family members can choose to receive text-message notifications from MERRIK. These are reminders and alerts that point the person back to the app, for example:

  • updates to shared events, outings and polls you are part of (for example, a movie-night poll has opened, or an outing time changed);
  • event start times;
  • updates to tasks you are part of;
  • reminders you set up for yourself, such as appointments.

Texts never contain medical or financial details. A text only says that something is waiting; the details stay inside the app, behind each person's login.

  • Who receives textsOnly invited MERRIK members with an account who have switched text notifications on themselves.
  • How oftenMessage frequency varies with the alerts you choose; usually a few per week, within a daily limit set for each person.
  • CostMERRIK never charges for texts. Message and data rates may apply from your mobile carrier.
  • Stop or get helpReply STOP to any text to stop all texts. Reply HELP for help. Or email [email protected].

How a family member opts in

Text notifications are always off until the family member turns them on. Signed in to their own MERRIK account, the member opens Settings → Notifications, enters their mobile number, and ticks a consent box that is never pre-ticked. The box reads exactly as below. Text notifications are optional; every part of MERRIK works without them.

Right after opting in, the member receives one text asking them to confirm from that phone. Nothing more is sent unless they reply YES:

MERRIK: Reply YES to confirm you want MERRIK Family Notifications at this number. Msg & data rates may apply. Reply STOP to cancel.

When they reply YES, they receive one confirmation text:

MERRIK: You are signed up for MERRIK Family Notifications. Msg frequency varies. Msg & data rates may apply. Reply HELP for help, STOP to opt out.

Examples of MERRIK texts

MERRIK: Your movie night poll is open! Cast your vote for Friday in Watch Party. Reply STOP to opt out.

MERRIK: Tonight is movie night! Casablanca starts at 7:00 PM. Reply STOP to opt out.

MERRIK: Your plans for Friday Movie Outing were updated. Open MERRIK for details. Reply STOP to opt out.

MERRIK: You have a reminder waiting. Open MERRIK when you have a moment. Reply STOP to opt out.

MERRIK: Your task on Kitchen Remodel was updated. Open MERRIK to see it. Reply STOP to opt out.

How to stop

Reply STOP to any MERRIK text and you will receive one final message confirming you are unsubscribed, then no more texts. You can also switch text notifications off in Settings → Notifications at any time. To rejoin, reply START or switch them back on.
